Chair of Corporation
John Denning, a College governor since March 2013, was appointed Chair from 1 April 2014. John’s priorities are to work with the Board, Principal and the Executive Team to improve the quality of student outcomes and their experience at the College whilst supporting the training and development needs of employers and the wider community.
The largest further education college in Surrey, Guildford College has a broad range of courses on offer to all age groups. The College Group incorporates the College in Stoke Park, Guildford, Merrist Wood, a land-based College and Farnham, a sixth form College.
As a Chartered Surveyor, John has a special interest in the Group’s investment in the redevelopment of the estates. Recent development projects include the creation of a new Animal Management Centre at Merrist Wood College and a high quality building to support the delivery of courses to students with learning difficulties and disabilities, also at Merrist Wood College. A number of other initiatives are being progressed at all three Colleges.
Having retired from full-time employment in the leisure and retail industries, John holds a range of non-executive positions in the private, public and charity sectors, including Senior Independent Director and Chairman of the Royal Surrey County Hospital, Chair of the Retirement Lease Housing Association based in Aldershot, Magistrate on the North Hampshire Bench, Board Trustee of the Queen Elizabeth Foundation for Disabled People in Leatherhead, and Director of Aldershot Town Football Club. John’s motivation in these roles is to make a difference to those people and communities that the organisations serve.
